Marcey and Beignet

How has your life changed since receiving your service dog?
My life has changed dramatically since I was partnered with Beignet. She has been able to provide me with a level of independence that I wasn’t sure was possible when I was first diagnosed with seizures.
What is one thing you are able to do now that you couldn’t before receiving your dog?
I am able to live each day without the constant fear that my body will betray me without any advanced warning. Beignet alerts me before my seizures and she has taught me to listen to my body better to better anticipate and prepare for a seizure.
Describe your daily life with your service dog?
Beignet is there for me 24/7. She accompanies me to the VFW, to events and vacations, and to my children’s activities. She will wake me in the middle of the night if needed and is always there to alert me when I may not notice my own seizure triggers or cues. She also helps with PTSD and night terrors.
What affect has your service dog had on the relationships in your life?
Walking with Beignet means that you never meet a stranger because everyone wants to ask about her and pet her, (some people even want to take pictures of her). I was not expecting a rockstar level dog but that’s what I got and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Some days it is hard to share my personal medical issues with perfect strangers but if she inspires one Veteran to get the help that they need, sharing my story is worth it.
What is one thing you would tell a fellow veteran that was considering a service dog?
This is a real commitment to a new normal and it is life changing. Don’t be afraid to ask a handler for their input and advice before you decide if it is the best choice for you.
