Lamar and Smokey
How has your life changed since receiving your service dog?
I have found a new companion that gives unconditional love.
What is one thing you are able to do now that you couldn’t before receiving your dog?
Going into crowded public places without having anxiety and reducing some of the hypervigilance I have experienced in the past. He has already helped reduce my occurrences of depression and unhappiness. I am sleeping better and have more energy overall.
Describe your daily life with your service dog?
My daily life is focused on the care of Smokey. I wake up looking forward to my day. He accompanies me on wherever my day leads me whether it be church, going to the store, or even to the gym. He loves riding in the car and is always excited to go out to work.. At home we continue to train together, play fetch and give and he plays with my other dogs.
What effect has your service dog had on the relationships in your life?
He has made a positive impact on my family, especially with my grandchildren….he is great with kids! Everyone in my family that has met Smokey thinks he is amazing. I have found that when Smokey is with me I interact more with people in general due the interest that Smokey generates.
What is one thing you would tell a fellow veteran that was considering a service dog?
I would tell a Veteran that a service dog would indeed change his/her life for the better and that the USVSD program is top notch with a priority focused on getting the right service dog for their needs. Apply now!!
